STEM Festival
THE STEM FESTIVAL
The STEM Festival is a month-long celebration of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) that seeks to promote the study of STEM in our schools, educate Ghanaians on the various careers in STEM, as well as give Ghanaian youth the opportunity to explore and showcase their innovative ideas. The STEM Festival constitutes the Mentorship Sessions and the Sci-Tech Fair, which were both satellite events on the National Science & Maths Quiz (NSMQ) and Science Festival event produced by Primetime Limited.
In 2021, however, these two events have been detached from the NSMQ and rebranded as the STEM Festival, which would come off in July, 2021.
MENTORSHIP SESSIONS
The Mentorship Sessions are career-guidance sessions which are targeted at Senior High School students.
Since its inception in 2013 as a satellite event of the National Science & Maths Quiz, the Mentorship Sessions have had well-seasoned and distinguished figures and professionals working in science and technology-related fields share their experiences with the students.
These informative sessions also give the students the guidance they may need to reach their highest potential, as well as help them discover and develop their interests and innermost passions.
THE SCI-TECH FAIR
The Sci-Tech Fair was introduced in 2017 as a practical extension of the NSMQ to provide a platform for students, as well as Tech Start-ups to apply their ingenuity, knowledge and understanding of science concepts studied in the classroom to produce solutions, or inventions that could help solve problems in Ghana. That aside, the Fair affords students at various levels of education the opportunity to interact with each other and with other individuals from Technology Start-ups, and to expose them to the reality of the Science and Technology world.
Moreover, during the Fair, there is an experiential stand that allows observers and participants to perform simple experiments under supervision, which most of the participants, especially children, find interesting. In previous editions, experiments have ranged from simple tests for starch and protein to the dissection of a rabbit and a toad, as well as coding lessons with volunteers from the Soronko Academy.
Since its inception in 2017, the Sci-Tech Fair has been an exhibition only, however, for the 2021 edition of the Fair, which would come off on July 26 & 27, there would also be a competition among Senior High Schools, termed the Sci-Tech Innovation Challenge.
Re-denomination of the Ghanaian Currency
The Bank of Ghana hoped to create public awareness and develop strategies to educate Ghanaian populace about the Re-denomination of the Ghanaian currency. Primetime solely but efficiently created and managed the most successful public education campaign in this country to brand the new currency. This was the famous ‘The Value is the Same’ campaign held in 2006-2008; it was the winner of Gong-Gong Award, Gold Category, for TV, 2006.
Production of the TEN Science, Oil & Gas Quiz
With regards to DCC, we are pioneers and industry leaders; we have conducted DCC activities for a number of clients over the years and among them is Tullow Ghana Limited. As part of the production of the TEN Science, Oil & Gas Quiz for Senior High Schools in the then Western Region, we organized stakeholder engagement activities in all the districts of the region, creating awareness about the project.
The Fourth Industrial Revolution
We conducted a research for the African Centre for Economic Transformation (ACET) in 2018, on The Fourth Industrial Revolution. This body of research involved three separate surveys targeted at students, firms/employers and representative groups, Heads of Secondary and Technical, Vocational, and Educational Training (TVET) schools, teacher training directors and teacher training specialists (education and TVET training institutions) and directors at education, ministries and TVET ministries, as well as a focus group discussion involving various stakeholders and education policy-makers. The research assessed the preparedness of the various stakeholders for the changes the fourth Industrial revolution (4iR) would cause to the way people live, work and relate with one another, especially with regards to education and the job market.
National Science and Maths Quiz
: NSMQ is the longest running independently produced programme on any television network in this country, involving about 500 senior high schools nationwide. The programme was accepted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), and expanded into “The West African Science and Maths Quiz” in 2007. It was adjudged as the CIMG TV Programme of the Year, 2017 and received the AAG Gong-Gong Gold Award for the Integrated Campaign (Entertainment) of the year, 2019.
