Sci-Tech Fair 2018 Opens with over 35 Exhibitors

The 2^nd edition of the Sci-Tech Fair has officially opened with over 35 exhibitors largely drawn from Junior and Senior High schools across the country.

The Fair provides the platform where students present their science project results in the form of a report, display board, and models they have invented.

The initiative also forms part of measures by Primetime, producers of the 2018 National Science & Maths Quiz and Science Festival, in offering students the opportunity of putting into practice the theories they were taught in the classroom.

Some of the exhibits included electromagnetic levers, Solar panel street lights, match box microphones, miniature Jet engine and hydroelectric plants, Smart Waste Bins and 3D architectural models.

Speaking at the brief opening ceremony, Mrs. Nana Akua Ankomah-Asare, Managing Director of Primetime limited, said the exhibitions presented by the students are good initiatives capable of providing home-made solutions to the numerous problems confronting Ghana.

“I went around this morning and saw so many things people have put together and I believe we can have home-made solutions to our problems and the students here today are showing us just that,” she said.

Mrs. Ankomah-Asare called on both the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI) to pay critical attention in supporting the ingenuity of the students.

She further acknowledged the efforts of the teachers for assisting the students in putting up the projects on display.

Mrs Ankomah-Asare also thanked the sponsors of the two-day Sci-Tech Fair; GOIL, Prudential Life Insurance Ghana and Tullow Ghana, for making it a reality.

The sponsors of the fair also took turns in addressing the participants.

First to speak was Mr. Alex Josiah Adzew, Chief Operating Officer of GOIL. According to him, science and technology remains the surest bet in propelling Ghana’s developmental agenda and that Goil will continue to support events such as the Sci-Tech Fair in unearthing the potentials of the young ones.

“Science and technology has also become the vehicle that allows students to develop self-confidence and the desire to learn and promote teamwork. The world is changing at a fast rate and it is, therefore, important for us to embrace Science and technology,” Mr. Adzew indicated.

On the part of Prudential Life Insurance Ghana, Mr. George Nortey Yeboah, Agency Development Executive, also pledged his outfit’s support in unearthing the innate desires of students.

Mr. Samuel Akyea, Senior Logistics and Materials Advisor of Tullow Ghana Limited indicated that Tullow’s association with the Sci-Tech Fair is in line with his company’s new strategy in building capacity of individuals studying the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) courses in Ghana. According to him, Tullow Ghana Limited has refurbished a number of Science Resource Centres mainly in the Central and Western regions of Ghana.

The two-day Sci-Tech Fair is sponsored by GOIL, Prudential Life Insurance Ghana and Tullow Ghana Limited.
